No. 17 / 18 East Texas Baptist 60, Belhaven 47

JACKSON, Miss. – Battling through a tight second half East Texas Baptist pulled through a close second half over Belhaven. The win puts ETBU at 4-0, which continues to be the best start in program history.

Louisiana College 35, Howard Payne 7

PINEVILLE, La. – Louisiana College picked up its first conference victory of the season on Saturday as they took down the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets (35-7) led the LC defense. The Wildcats improve to 3-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in ASC play with the victory.

QUOTES FROM COACH JOHN PEARCE

On the third quarter shift in momentum at HSU: It was a physical game throughout all four quarters. We had several calls that didn't go our direction in the second half. But without or without those penalties we still didn't tackle well enough late in the game to beat the 10th-ranked team in the country. We had some missed communication in the secondary that cost us as well as some missed opportunities offensively.

On Davis and the running game: James had a heck of a game with those two big touchdown runs. He's really starting to understand and grasp the kind of offense that coach (Zac) Connors has implemented. He made some great passes and we had some missed balls but our receivers weren't running the correct routes. But he knew where he was supposed to hit the target.

Thoughts on the offensive line: They're hanging in there. We have a couple of starting freshmen on the front so they're going to go through some ups and downs. But they're holding up and I think what we're doing offensively, just mixing the ball up, running inside and outside and quick passes, helps those guys on our line.

On handling the emotion of a late-game loss: It was an emotional game from start to finish. We came out Sunday and held a helmet practice but the spirit of the team is good. Our guys are wanting to get better. We're still making some mistakes in terms of technique but we're trying the to make this thing go in the right direction.

Thoughts on the defense: Again, we're still making mistakes with our tackling. We had live practices during our bye week so we're trying to shore up those mistakes but those corrections need to translate over to game day. Things like basic technique, running our feet on tackles and not trying to use NFL-style tackling where players try to take opponents' ankles out. It just boils down to sticking, wrapping up and finishing the play.

Thoughts and keys on facing Belhaven: I'm expecting a shootout. They threw the ball over 60 times against ETBU. They have a big transfer quarterback who stays in the pocket and knows where to throw the ball so they're capable of making big plays. When you throw the ball that many times something good is going to happen. Offensively we need to control the clock and not overtax the defense which hurt us at their place last season. Defensively we need to keep the ball in front of us. There's going to be opportunities for interceptions and we need to capitalize when we have those opportunities. We need to continue to put pressure on the quarterback. It's going to be challenging because they have such wide splits up front and their timing routes are very fast.
